I wanted to thank Amy for the fantastic work she has done for this group while I had some other projects to work on.
I want to give you all some updates and reminders.

Draft RFA/RFP Recommended Components:
I am currently waiting for my computer here to connect to my work e-mail so I can post the "Draft RFA/RFP Recommended Components" from the Prevention Leadership Council (PLC). If I am unable to post them today, then expect them on Monday, July 20th. Whether it is today or tomorrow, please review it and make some comments to the post. You will see that there are general areas that state something to the point of "needs to be developed." These ambiguous arenas are where your input with us both at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and with the PLC will provide the most influence. If you see an area where you feel a change in language or direction is necessary, please also share. I will soon provide information as to how I am sending our recommendations to the PLC and how you can too so our comments are included in the further development of this document. This information will also include how to influence the PLC in general.

White Paper:
Please see the White Paper Resources in the CYDT Policy Integration Committee Discussions – you might need to click “view all.” Again reply with comments and even opportunities to share this information. It seems as though these are very useful and well grounded documents and put us a head in the White Paper strategy for this group.

Youth Involvement:
As is the overall goal of the CYDT, we must intentionally and consistently have youth/adult involvement. Please let your communities’ young people know about the CYDT and invite them to participate in this group.

Next Meeting:
I will be sending out a new Meeting Wizard for our next conference call (if I am able to access my e-mail today). Amy did send one recently and some of us (me) were not able reply in time. Because I was the culprit, I will work on the next meeting – you should expect this on July 20 because I e-mail is not working.

Other Items:
On our last call, there were other items that I have not mentioned yet. The first of these is if this group is looking at Federal requirements around RFA/RFP Positive Youth Development language/requirements. We have been quite lucky that the strategies for this group have had great progress and also are timely. This is not currently being looked at, but it is a great next step. The second other item is a “how to” webinar for the coloradoyouthdevelopment.ning.com. Amy is now conceptualizing this so that it can be a presentation that is flexible enough to be interactive if shared at a later stage. A Children’s Cabinet is the third other item discussed on the last call. This too can be discussed when we talk about how to interact and influence the PLC.

Focus of the next call:
Our next call will focus on three or four topics: RFA/RFP document, youth involvement, PLC influence, and the white paper. These topics are priority for two reasons. The first reason is timing. The RFA/RFP Components document is in process and must be addressed so we do not miss our opportunity. Youth involvement is a non-negotiable for CYDT and this group. We must have Colorado’s youth involved in this process for better results and to lead by example. How to influence and interact with the PLC is a priority because so much of our work can be channeled through them. Lastly, the white paper discussion should be held because the paper will provide a great output to share and frame the conversation we hold to integrate PYD.

So, my e-mail has not worked. I will post and e-mail on July 20.

Thank you all for your commitment in helping shift the mindset “fixing teens’ problems, … to nurtur[ing] their potential” (Brindis, 1998) (from Stephanie Walton’s white papers post).

I edited the name to PYD POLICY Integration. Does that help in clarity?

At long last, the Positive Youth Development (PYD) Integration Committee is launching from the Colorado Youth Development Team (CYDT)! Your input from the community conversations this past winter has helped to shape the new plan for CYDT and the strategies for this committee. Please join us in making these ideas and recommendations a reality!

The PYD Integration Committee is addressing:

~ Developing white papers to disseminate to key leaders and policymakers on the effectiveness of PYD strategies.
~ Advocating for PYD in the state agency prevention programs' common RFP/A template that is being developed right now!
~ Assessing current/upcoming opportunities for CYDT to influence changes in policies, procedures, strategic plans, regulations, requirements and practices so that they are more supportive of PYD strategies.
~ Working with existing data collection systems to include collecting positive indicators of youth development.

The first "meeting" will be held on July 1st from 10-11am via conference call. The toll-free number to call is 1-866-899-5399. Then enter the code *9574572* (don't forget the stars!)

The agenda will provide background and updates on the CYDT and then discuss this committee in particular. The goal will be to assess interest, prioritize the above strategies and set up a "meeting" structure.

Please feel free to invite your colleagues and community, youth and family leaders who you think might be a good fit for this committee.

If you are unable to attend, we will post notes here, so come back and join the conversation!
