What a great question!!! So great, The Colorado Youth Development Team asked it on our recent environmental scan (a.k.a. survey) that went out to hundreds of folks across the state. We found that there are 75 unique youth advisory boards in Colorado! 75! Stay tuned for more information on what communities and organizations have them and how to utilize their services or join one near you!
A Youth Partnership for Health has been created in La Plata County! We just had our last meeting of the school year on Sunday at the new bowling alley in Ignacio. Our group consists of 6 students, (2 from each community - Durango, Bayfield, & Ignacio) and 4 adults (from Durango Schools & San Juan Basin Health Department). The Youth Partnership for Health at the state level has been very inspirational in our development of this youth advisory board, and the DVD and manual have been crucial in our start up! This year has been really about setting up our partnership and ensuring its sustainability. We hope to expand from here.
The Eagle River Youth Coalition has had a Youth Leaders Council since 2006. It has proven very valuable for our community, and it has truly moved us forward with positive youth development. It is made-up of youth from public and private high schools. The YLC just participated in Global Youth Service Day this past Saturday, and they are now preparing for a celebration and to close out the year.
I am the coordinator of the El Paso County DHS Youth Advisory Board. A youth myself, i have been charged with creating and maintaing a YAB specific to the social services provided to youth. We've been a functioning board for 11 months now, and have seen quite a bit of progress. I'm giving a presentation at a conference next week, and have had to compile all sorts of information on board formation, maintainence, and activity. If anyone would like more in depth information, feel free to contact me :)
Zach, your research sounds super useful! Could you upload it to this discussion? If you're willing to share, of course. Did I meet you in Colorado Springs back in February? That's so impressive that you run your Advisory Board! It's supported by the health & human services dept? Would love for you to get involved with the Colorado Youth Development Team if you have time in your schedule. Join the group for it on this site, so you can stay in touch with what's going on. There's not much on it yet, but there will be soon!!!
Apologies for the delay!
We are hoping to get these youth councils to map themselves on the member map under the member tab on this site. But for now, I'll post the list that is broken down by county. Check out all the great youth leadership groups in your area!!!
Colorado State University Extension, 4-H Youth Development programs have curriculum on Youth-Adult Partnerships. It is designed to help youth and adults recognize the benefits and challenges of working together and make progress on community issues. Each one of our county offices across Colorado have a copy of the curriculum and I'd be happy to facilitate training with your organization.
